The best spaces are not designed for clients — they are designed with them. Every commission begins with a genuine effort to understand not just what clients want, but how they truly live.

Vaishali Sharma is a graduate of Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai — one of India's oldest and most respected institutions for architectural education, where she developed the rigorous, research-led sensibility that defines her practice. She co-founded FD Design in 2000 alongside Raghu Sharma, establishing a practice that would spend twenty-six years building a reputation for work that is rooted in context, sensitive to the human condition, and genuinely responsive to the lives of the people it is designed for.
Her practice centres on the residential and interior design work of FD Design — the domain in which the firm's Fourth Dimension philosophy is perhaps most directly expressed. To design a home well is to understand a family: how they move through space during different parts of the day, how they seek privacy and how they gather, what quality of light matters in the morning versus the evening, how the relationship between inside and outside shifts across seasons. These are not questions that can be answered from a distance. They require sustained conversation, patient listening, and the willingness to design from the client's life rather than from the designer's aesthetic preference.
Her academic formation at Sir JJ — an institution known for its strong grounding in both modernist tradition and India's vernacular architectural heritage — gave her a fluency in blending classical spatial thinking with contemporary practicality. The result is interiors and residences that feel rooted in their place and time, without being confined by either.
"A home is not a portfolio piece. It is a living environment that must perform — with grace, with functionality, with the ability to hold a family's life across decades. That is the standard we hold ourselves to."
Nature is a constant presence in Vaishali's work — not as decoration, but as a design material with functional and emotional weight. Water features, garden courts, rooftop landscapes, and carefully managed relationships between interior and exterior are recurring elements across her portfolio. She understands the Indian climate deeply, and knows how to design for it: how to create coolness, how to bring in light without heat, how to make a covered outdoor space that is genuinely usable across the year.
Beyond the design work itself, Vaishali leads FD Design's client relationships — a responsibility that reflects her conviction that architecture is fundamentally a collaborative act. The best outcomes emerge when the client is genuinely involved in the process, not merely consulted at milestones. She has spent twenty-six years cultivating the kind of relationships where that level of collaboration is possible: built on trust, sustained by communication, and confirmed by the quality of what is ultimately delivered.
These are not aesthetic preferences — they are the working convictions that Vaishali Sharma brings to every residential and interior commission. They are earned from 26 years of sitting with clients in their homes and understanding what actually matters in daily life.
Every commission begins not with a sketch, but with a conversation. Understanding how a family truly lives — their rhythms, habits, and aspirations — is the first act of design.
A home must be designed for how it will be experienced across years of occupation — not for how it photographs at completion. Time is always the fourth dimension.
Water, light, and landscape are structural elements — integrated from the first sketch. A garden court is not a luxury; it is a mediator between inside and outside, between solitude and gathering.
Fashion in interiors is short-lived. The materials and finishes chosen for a home should improve with use and occupation — becoming more characterful, not more dated, over time.
Every home is designed for its specific climate and site. How light enters, how air moves, how the space responds to the Indian seasons — these are not afterthoughts but primary design drivers.
The same team that designs a home sees it through to completion. From concept to construction supervision to post-occupancy — one team, one standard, no handoffs.
