About FD Design

Architecture
shaped by the
Fourth
Dimension

A New Delhi practice founded in 2000. Designing spaces that are experienced through time — not just observed in photographs.

FD Design was founded on a single conviction: that architecture must account for more than three dimensions.

Ar. Vaishali Sharma and Ar. Raghu Sharma established the practice after training at two of India's most respected architecture schools. Over 26 years, they have built a firm that works at every scale — from private residences to destination hospitality — without compromising the depth of thought each project receives.

The
Fourth
Dimension

Space is not a fixed object. It is something experienced through movement, light, weather, and time — and it is in that experience where architecture either succeeds or fails.

The concept of the Fourth Dimension originated during the academic years of Ar. Vaishali Sharma and Ar. Raghu Sharma — a framework developed in dissertation that has since become the philosophical foundation of the firm. Conventional architecture works in three dimensions: length, width, and height. FD Design adds a fourth: the dimension of time, occupation, and lived human experience.

This is why FD Design's work tends to age well. Spaces designed with the Fourth Dimension in mind are not optimised for the moment of completion — they are designed for the years, decades, and sometimes generations that follow. Materials are chosen for how they will weather. Landscapes are planned for how they will grow. Interiors are organised for how the patterns of daily life will flow through them.

The philosophy also explains the firm's relationship with nature. Water, landscape, and light are not decorative elements in FD Design's work — they are structural. They are part of the architecture. A water feature is not an amenity; it is a calibrator of temperature, sound, and mood. A garden court is not a luxury; it is a mediator between inside and outside, between built and natural, between solitude and gathering.

The Name
"FD Design is named for the Fourth Dimension — the belief that a great space is never just something you see. It is something you inhabit, return to, and remember."

Vaishali leads the studio's residential and interior design practice, bringing an exceptional sensitivity to the human dimension of space — how people move through their homes, seek privacy, gather, and experience light and material through daily life. She is the firm's lead on client relationships, shaped by her conviction that the best design begins with listening.

His current focus includes the firm's hospitality development consulting practice, advising landowners and investors on the strategic structuring of hospitality-led projects across North India's key tourism corridors.

Six principles
that guide every project

These are not marketing statements. They are the working principles that shape how FD Design approaches every commission — from the first site visit to the final walkthrough.

01
The Fourth Dimension

Every space is designed not just for how it looks at completion, but for how it will be experienced across years of daily inhabitation. Time is the fourth dimension we always design for.

02
Context Before Concept

We do not apply a house style. Every project begins with a reading of its site, climate, culture, and client. What belongs here? What does this land want to become? The brief follows the site.

03
Nature as Structure

Water, landscape, and light are structural elements of design — integrated from the first sketch, not added at the end. In FD Design's work, a garden court is architecture, not amenity.

04
Full Accountability

The same team that designs a project sees it through to completion. From concept to construction supervision to post-occupancy review — one team, one point of responsibility, no handoffs.

05
Craftsmanship Over Trend

Fashion in architecture is short-lived. We choose materials and details that age gracefully — that improve with occupation and become more meaningful over time, not less.

06
Design Begins With Listening

The best spaces are not designed for clients — they are designed with them. Every commission begins with a genuine effort to understand not just what clients want, but how they truly live.
